Mr. Kern has been an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Economic Crimes Unit of the Cleveland U.S. Attorney’s Office since 1991. In addition to prosecuting financial institution fraud cases, he has served as the Computer & Telecommunications Crime Coordinator ("CTC") for the Northern District of Ohio since 1994. Mr. Kern is responsible for the prosecution of cases involving financial institution fraud, identity theft, credit card fraud, counterfeiting, securities and investment frauds, intellectual property crimes and other economic crime matters.

As the computer crimes coordinator for the Northern District of Ohio, Mr. Kern is responsible for prosecution of a wide variety of computer-related crimes, including computer intrusions, denial of service attacks, internet fraud schemes, on-line auction fraud, cellular telephone fraud, illegal pirating of computer software, and cases involving the illegal interception and decryption of satellite television signals.

Mr. Kern holds a BA degree (with honors) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1979), and a Juris Doctor degree from Ohio Northern University (1982). While in law school, he served as Managing Editor of the Law Review. He has been admitted to the Ohio Bar since 1982, and is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, the U.S. Claims Court, the U.S. Tax Court, and the United States Supreme Court.

Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 1991, Mr. Kern was in private practice in Sandusky, Ohio (1982-1984), served as a Trial Attorney with U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division in Washington, D.C. (1984-1987), and served as Senior Litigation Counsel with the Internal Revenue Service in Cleveland, Ohio (1987-1991). In November 2001, Mr. Kern was elected to a four term as a Board Member for the Vermilion Local Schools, and currently serves as President of the Vermilion Board of Education.
