I read an article last month entitled "The Elevator Speech." It deals with the scenario where a rank-and-file person encounters the CEO of their company riding in the elevator with them. Some people fear this kind of chance meeting. What would you say to the CEO if it were you? Would you talk about the weather, last night’s sports, or would you hunker back in the corner hoping the ride was over quickly? How about some high-level PR? Why not use that minute to let them know what the IT department has accomplished recently and your specific part in it? This is great public relations opportunity for your career as well as for IT. You might bring up some important concept to help meet your company’s goals and objectives? Talk about profit, growth, and customer loyalty – the top executives will take notice. IT’s objectives should be aligned with the company’s and you should know how your own work is helping to attain them. The mini speech could cause something good to happen or generate another discussion in more depth.
The secret is to be prepared ahead of time with your mini presentation. I thought about how many missed opportunities we pass up every day, whether with the CEO of our company or other top executives. Perhaps the people who really get ahead, are the ones who are able to take advantage of the little minutes, by having mini presentations mentally prepared for such an occasion. Effective networking is the standard by which we are measured every time we speak. If we are prepared, we might be the ones who are really jumping ahead in our field. This is not a new idea, but it makes you stop and think about where you are going and how you are going to get there.
AITP offers many opportunities to pick up on what is happening in the computer world and help you prepare your presentation. Come out this month and network with us. Maybe you will get some ideas to incorporate into your speech for the elevator. Are you ready for that chance encounter?
Our program topic this month, "LINUX vs. Windows" will be presented by Stuart Goldlust, of Global Technical Training. He will cover "Why Linux rather than Windows" and "What is good/bad about Linux", as well as many other topics. The meeting is on May 27th. Please join us. I hope to see you there.
